Italian Nerve Secures Matchplay Title in Thrilling International Final
22. marts 2026
There was no sign of nerves from either Kai or Simone on the road to the final of the club’s International Singles Matchplay. The tournament, which has been played out since January, has tested players across both winter conditions and indoor simulators – but consistency has defined the two finalists.
Simone impressed throughout the competition with victories over Jesper of Denmark and Steve from Australia. Kai, meanwhile, took the longer route to the final, navigating an all-German clash against David from Berlin, followed by another win over compatriot Lukas, before sealing his place with a strong performance against James Kears from London.
The final set up a Germany versus Italy showdown – and it did not disappoint.
Played on summer greens for the first time in the tournament, conditions allowed for a more honest and enjoyable contest. Kai made the brighter start, producing steady golf and picking up an early birdie to move 2 up after the opening stretch.
But Simone had no intention of letting the match slip away.
The Italian battled back impressively, squaring the match by the turn after nine tightly contested holes.
Playing off a handicap of 29.8 and receiving 17 shots, Simone may have been the underdog on paper, but his performance told a different story. A superb birdie on the opening hole of the back nine (hole 10) shifted momentum, and another composed approach shortly after saw him take control of the match.
Suddenly, Simone was 2 up with just three holes to play.
Kai responded by taking a hole back, but every push was met with an immediate answer. With the pressure mounting and needing to outperform Simone by two shots on each hole, the task proved too steep.
The decisive moment came on the 17th. (8)
Despite an errant drive, Simone showed remarkable composure. Reaching the green in four, he left himself just two meters for the win – and calmly rolled in the putt to seal the match.
Simone Derserti claimed a well-deserved 3&1 victory, securing the title for Italy after a final that delivered both drama and quality in equal measure.
